Naviance is a very important tool in the college process. It's an online platform for students and counselors, and its purpose is to help students make plans for their future and discover their skills and interests. You can sign in on student.naviance.com. Click "continue using Clever" to sign in with your school email and password!
9th-11th grade students should use Naviance as an exploration tool. You can find information about colleges and career paths. You can also build your resume, take quizzes to identify your strengths, and set SMART goals.
12th grade students should get comfortable using Naviance for a variety of purposes:
~ Explore college options and build your college list. On the homepage of Naviance, you can search for any college. On each college's profile, you will find information about academics, campus life, diversity, and the application process. Click through the tabs on the top to find the information you need. Under the Admissions tab, you will find data about BLA students from prior years who have applied to the college. Check out the scattergrams to see the academic profile of students who have been accepted in the past. This is very useful for understanding how likely it is that you would be accepted. Remember, this graph does not account for other application factors such as recommendation letters and essays. It is a starting place; not a guarantee! While you are exploring colleges, you can also try out the SuperMatch tool. Go to Colleges ---> Find Your Fit ---> SuperMatch. This tool allows you to enter all your preferences, and it will produce a list of colleges that could work for you. As you are reviewing the results, click on the heart next to any college that you like. This will add the college to your list of "Colleges I'm thinking about." If you are applying to any colleges that do not use the Common App, you need to add the college to your Naviance college list manually. Follow these steps:
Search for the college on Naviance and navigate to the college's profile. Click on the heart at the top to add the college to your list of "Colleges I'm thinking about."
Go to your list of "Colleges I'm thinking about."
Check the box at the left for the college you just added.
Click "Move to applications list."
~ Connect your Common App and Naviance accounts. If you are applying to college through Common App, you must connect your account to your Naviance account. This allows your teachers to send your recommendations, and allows your adviser to send your transcript to your colleges. Follow the steps below or check out the instructions on Google classroom!
On Common App, complete these sections: About me, family, education.
Add at least one college to your Common App list.
Navigate to the "My Colleges" tab on Common App. Click on any college that you have added.
Click on "Recommenders and FERPA"
Complete the FERPA authorization. This allows your adviser to send your transcript and other school records when you submit your applications. Select "I waive my right to view my recommendations." Sign and submit the authorization.
Log in to Naviance. Click on "Colleges" at the top.
Click on "Colleges I'm applying to." At the top, you will see a button to "Match Accounts." Follow the steps to enter your Common App email address.
Now that your accounts are connected, anytime you update your Common App list, your Naviance list will also reflect the changes.
~ Request teacher recommendation letters After you have asked your teacher if they are willing to write your recommendation, you must submit a formal request through Naviance. This allows your teacher to upload the letter and send it out to your colleges. Follow these steps:
Click on "Colleges" at the top of the Naviance homepage.
Click on "Apply to College"
Click on "Letters of recommendation." This is your recommendation letter dashboard.
On the dashboard, click on "Add request."
Follow the directions to select your teacher from the dropdown menu, select which colleges the recommendation should be sent to (most students choose "all current and future applications"), and write an optional note to your teacher.
Click "Submit." Now you will be able to see the status of your teacher recommendation letter(s)!
