This course is intended to parallel a college composition course. AP English Language and Composition allows students to write in a variety of forms – narrative, exploratory, expository, argumentative – and on a variety of subjects from personal experiences to public policies, from imaginative literature to popular culture. The main objective is to enable students to write effectively and confidently in all their college courses and in their professional and personal lives. Therefore, this course emphasizes the expository, synthesis, analytical, and argumentative writing that forms the basis of academic and professional communication, as well as the personal and reflective writing that fosters the ability to write in any context. Students should come to this class with a high level of reading strategy and comprehension as well as a strong background in expository writing.
AP English Literature and Composition is a one year course which provides opportunities for students to refine their critical thinking, communication, and expressive skills. Students closely read, discuss, and analyze works written in several genres - novels, plays, poems, and short stories - from the middle ages to the present. Authors are chosen from the AP English Course Description for the English Literature and Composition Exam, as well as from those appearing on previous AP English Literature and Composition Exams, representing authors from Britain, the Americas, and the world. All readings and assignments are at a level equivalent to those found at the freshman college level. At the conclusion of this class, all students will be prepared to sit for the AP English Literature and Composition Exam administered in May. The 12th grade critical theory paper is a requirement for this course. Resources: *Please use these resources at your discretion, in order to prepare for the respective AP Exam.
