Colleges consider the rigor of a student's coursework during the application review process as it provides insight into their academic preparedness, resilience, and willingness to challenge themselves, making it an important factor in assessing an applicant's potential for success at the college level.

10th graders should continue to take challenging classes, building on their 9th grade coursework, to prepare for college applications because it demonstrates their academic rigor, ability to handle advanced coursework, and intellectual curiosity to admissions officers. In addition to academic achievement, colleges are looking for improvement in grades and an upward trajectory throughout high school, as it demonstrates a student's growth, perseverance, and commitment to academic excellence.

Colleges are looking for well-rounded students. In addition to academic success, admissions officers review a student's involvement outside the classroom. It is important to engage in opportunities outside the classroom. This can include getting involved in sports, clubs, arts, community organizations, taking care of family, working, and so much more! Colleges also want to see that applicants are committed to their involvement so 10th grade is a great time to continue your involvement in activities you joined in 9th grade.

Extracurricular involvement plays a crucial role in college admissions as it showcases a student's interests, passions, leadership abilities, and ability to balance their academic commitments with meaningful engagement outside of the classroom. Active participation in extracurricular activities can demonstrate a well-rounded profile, highlighting qualities such as teamwork, initiative, and dedication, which are highly valued by colleges.
